Travel to the wilderness areas of the White Mountains, to elevations of 11,000 feet, to places few people ever go. The White Mountains offers a vast array of hiking trails, from the White Mountain Trail System of over 200 miles of interconnecting loop trails to shorter more local trails, for you to experience and enjoy. Be sure to take a map for more rural hikes, wear appropriate shoes, check weather conditions and don't forget to bring water.

Directions: In Show Low, go to east end of town, last traffic light and turn left onto Rte. 77.

Directions: In Lakeside, turn South on Woodland Lake Road. Go approx. 2 miles until road "T's",turn Left and travel approx. 2 more miles until you see signs on left for Woodland Lake Park. There are 2 entrances.

There are an infinite number of riding experiences on the mountain. The White Mountain Trail System offers 200 miles of interconnecting, multi-use (non motorized) loop trails stretching from Vernon on the east to Pinedale on the western edge.

Directions - From Pinetop-Lakeside go east on Rte 260. At Sunrise Ski Park turnoff turn right. Follow the traffic
or look for signs for Sunrise Lake.
Directions - In Show Low turn right at Burger King. Go to stop sign and turn left. Go a ways and Show Low High School will be on your right.

Late September through October the temperatures change and the leaves begin to turn. Plan a day to see the Fall Foliage. Travel east on Rte 260 to higher elevations and see the changes of autumn. Stop in Greer and have lunch at Molly Butlers or the Greer Lodge. Or, if you haven't seen enough continue on to Alpine and Hannigans Meadow to view more of the White Mountains during this splendid season.

Another way to enjoy the Fall Foliage is to go horseback riding at Blue Sky Stables, located close to Sunrise Ski Park. You will ride at 9000 feet or more and the ride is breath taking !!!

The Navajo Nation is immense encompassing the 4-corners of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. By lodging in the White Mountains and using it as a base camp one can take day trips and explore some of the sites. If time permits, a 2 day tour will enable you to visit Keams Canyon, Hopi Cultural Center, Navajo National Monument, Navajo Code Breakers exhibit in Kayenta at the Burger King Restaurant, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelle and a stop at the Hubbell Trading Post . An overnight in Kayenta is suggested if you do the two day tour.

The Zuni's were the first humans Coronado saw on his trek from Mexico City to find the 7 Cities of Gold. Their reservation is just over the border in New Mexico. Explore their culture and visit their trading posts. Drive another half hour to El Morro, visit the small museum and hike to the top of the mesa to view the Ancestral Puebloan Ruins. Along the way, look for petroglyphs and signatures of Conquistadors in the sandstone cliffs.
Directions: Take Rte. 60 east out of Show Low. At the "Y" turn left on Rte. 61. Go through the town of St. John's. Stay on this road. You will go through the very eastern edge of the Painted Desert. Look for sign on right to Zuni. You might want to stop and explore. El Morro is 35 miles east of Zuni, NM. Approx. drive time - 2 1/2 hours
